Reading Update
Spring has been a busy time for reading at PCP. Last half term, more children than ever before reached and, in many cases, exceeded their reading targets, and earned themselves treats and an own clothes’ day. At the beginning of each half term, we reset the accounts and all children get the chance to read towards individual success again. During the school day, every child is given enough reading time to reach their targets, but time spent reading at home supports this and is always beneficial. And of course, while reading towards a target and a reward is fun and challenging, the driving force behind our rewards ethos is to create a learning environment where reading is prioritised and enjoyable, which in turn develops our children into the best readers they can be.
Without our library, we would struggle to put our reading ideas into action and we are very fortunate to have so many families who donate books to us. We always show our appreciation with small tokens, but last half term we handsomely rewarded the donor of the 5000th book to be popped onto our shelves. Thank you so much, Zach, and we hope you love your gift as much as we will all love the books.
We all know reading at PCP is about numbers as well as words. Our running total this year so far is 68,000,000 words read, almost 10,000 texts read and quizzed on, and 4500 books borrowed. We are definitely blowing our own trumpets and shouting from the rooftops about this.
May we take this opportunity to remind carers and children that we are always here to talk about your child’s reading habits, struggles and successes and that these conversations tend to end on a positive note. We don’t want children to worry if they have accidentally lost a book, or a page has been torn; it happens. We don’t want children to feel they will never reach their target if they have missed a few days of reading; it happens. If we know what the problem is, we can fix it. Our new motto: no reader left behind!
BREAKING NEWS: we have just discovered that an exceptional reader in Year 2 (yes…Year 2!) has read more than 606,000 words this year. Francesca is always to be found with her nose in a book, or her Kindle, and absolutely loves reading. This has never been achieved at PCP before and we are as delighted as she is. Massive congratulations to you!
AND THANK YOU FOR YOUR INCREDIBLE EFFORTS ON WORLD BOOK DAY! GREAT READING MEMORIES WERE MADE!
