Curriculum- Autumn Term

Maths

We will continue to follow the Inspire Maths approach so children will be encouraged to use concrete resources, problem-solving and reasoning.  We will also encourage children to talk in 'maths sentences' to develop their oracy skills and will be introducing daily maths meetings to help rehearse and embed key maths skills.
We will focus on recalling and learning our timetable in a fun way, through the use of songs and games.

In lessons, we will continue the fractions unit started in Year 3.  After this, we will move on to our measuring units focussing on telling time and measuring volume.

Literacy

In our first Literacy and Language unit the children will be reading ‘Lost or Stolen?’ by Narinder Dhami to explore the themes of relationships, suspicion and trust. Opportunities for writing will involve using a story ‘roller coaster’ to plan and write a new chapter for the story.

We will also be writing poems using personification within our second unit of work. The children will play with poetic techniques such as, repetition, alliteration, onomatopoeia, rhyme and free verse.

Our grammar focus this term will be using fronted adverbials, commas, inverted commas and presenting dialogue.

We will also be writing letters, reports, diary extracts and taking notes through our curriculum topics such as History, Geography and Science.

We will post images of our time during our lessons to share with you soon - keep an eye out on Twitter!

Science.

Autumn 1- This unit focuses on the digestive system in humans and animals and the functions of teeth. Children will learn more about herbivores, carnivores and omnivores in the context of teeth, digestion and the food chain. In addition, they will extend their understanding of food chains to more complex chains and food webs. During our investigative science we will be seeking answers to questions such as 'Did the Romans use toilet paper?'

Local Study

We will be improving our geography and history skills with a study of Prescot. We will be particularly focusing on the shops in the high street and how they have changed over time. We will be drawing sketch maps and using a sketch map to follow a historical trail around Prescot.

History

This term we will looking at our Invaders, Raiders and Traders topic, which aims to teach the children about the impact the Roman Empire and the Viking invasions had on life in Britain. They will learn about the spread of the Roman Empire, the invasion of Britain and the eventual conquest. The children will explore in detail, some aspects of the Romanisation of Britain, such as the building of Roman roads and bath-houses. In addition to this they will have the opportunity to learn about the British resistance of Boudicca and will look at the events of Boudicca's rebellion from different perspectives.

Children will learn about the everyday lives of the people who settled here, including soldiers, and will explore significant people, events and stories from these periods' in history. Children will also add these eras to their timeline and gain a deeper understanding of the terms ‘invade’, ‘defend’ and ‘conquer'. New historical vocabulary will be introduced and the children will communicate ideas using these terms. Art and music from these periods will also be explored.

This project allows the children to investigate the physical and human features of the UK and how these have changed over time.

Year Four’s key monarch is William the Conqueror, who follows on from this period in history.
