Reading for pleasure

Throughout our school, we aim to promote the love of reading at every age and at every point throughout the day - from Breakfast Club, during lessons, passing the time at lunch to having a quiet read in After School Club. We also hope that our children take their love of reading home. We feel so strongly about reading for pleasure that we applied for the Liverpool Reading Quality Mark - and are pleased to say that we achieved GOLD! The love of reading is promoted in many ways - through competitions, assemblies and visitors, Pupil Reading Champions in each class, Book Swaps and Book Fairs, Parent Story times and 'Book Stops' throughout school. The Accelerated Reader scheme is now in place from Y2 to Y6 to expose children to a full range of 'real' books. We have also now added MyOn to our digital library. Children have access to a huge range of books and also have the ability to read both fiction and non-fiction books set by their class teacher linked to the current topic.

Our new library space is used by all of the children, in weekly slots or in daily 'drop-ins'. The library is a cosy, colourful space in which the children are encouraged to kick off their shoes, find a comfy spot and read, read, read. We daily record the amount of visits to our library; this regularly exceeds 100 visits. It really is a well-used space that prioritises reading for pleasure and it is highly valued by everyone in school.
We are always looking for new ways to engage our young readers. We love having some fun on World Book Day and take pleasure from exploring books in depth during our week-long focus on books. Watch our World Book Day video here:
